Timothy Joel Austin Memorial Scholarship

About Joel

Timothy Joel Austin was an amazing young man. Joel was unassuming, quiet and soft spoken. He was not one seeking to be the center of attention. One of Joel's unique and special traits was his willingness to help others. Often, it was just simple things like helping someone load groceries into their car. Frequently he would volunteer his time on much larger projects like building Chicken pens at the Wears Valley Ranch. To take a step back and watch, you would see this quiet unassuming young man finding joy and purpose in helping others. It was obvious he wasn't interested in attention, compensation or even outward appreciation. Joel found his joy and his purpose in seemingly simple acts of helping others. This heart of service is probably what led Joel to join the military. Joel volunteered to serve in the United States Navy as a Corpsman. Once again, in a role where he would help and serve others. In late February of 2018 we lost Joel. The world lost a truly special giving young man.

The Scholarship

The intent of this scholarship is to bring attention to and encourage others to display the same giving spirit that Joel did so naturally. This scholarship will be awarded to that student who has demonstrated selfless giving and concern for others. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to a graduating senior from Pigeon Forge High School. The recipient of this scholarship will not necessarily be the class valedictorian. While the importance of academic achievement is obvious, there are other equally important factors that determine ones success in life. The applicant should be able to demonstrate their faith, have a heart for helping and serving others, a willingness to work hard and persevere through hardship.
